The Local Scene...
St. John’s... WE NEED YOUR HELP BUT NOT YOUR MONEY for this project! We would like to have Newfoundland truly represented on our website. Please send any news of a pro-life nature that’s happening in your community so we can place it on our website. I’m Dave Duff and my email is david.d@roadrunner.nf.net Send them to me because we also want to expand our newsletter Local Scene to include the whole province. I will continue to reach out beyond the capital city as I get phone numbers and emails. Hence, we need your help but not your money. If something of a pro-life nature is happening in your community, let me know: an award, a raffle, a bingo, a dance, a protest, a prayer group, etc.. On The Ball Ever the watchful guardian, Norm Doyle, MP for St. John’s East and a vocal pro-life advocate, called Collette at the Right to Life office to enquire whether they had a summer replacement student under the SWASP program. Mr. Doyle gets the list of students being placed and is always keen to look out for pro-life interests. Mr. Doyle also promised to make a donation to the Right to Life from his pension fund. SWASP Student The Right to Life Association was the recipient of a SWASP student this summer. SWASP is a co-operative effort between the private sector and the provincial government for student summer replacement. This summer the recipient was Megan Duff, a graduate of Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School. Such students are paid a salary but most is held back and given to the student in the form of a voucher towards their future education in a post-secondary institution of their choice. Megan did an excellent job helping the office run more smoothly during the summer. Collette, the office manager, said it was a lifesaver to actually have someone to answer the phone and take messages. Megan also took care of the mail and made out receipts for donations- among her other duties. She is currently pursuing a program in computer studies, a Multi-Media Program, on the Clarenville Campus. Megan is the daughter of Connie and Dave Duff of St. John’s. We wish Megan all the best in her studies. Submitted by Collette Fleming Elsewhere in Province... Lawn... Holy Name of Mary Church in Lawn has a Pro-Life Corner containing materials, such as pamphlets, for the purpose of educating the general public on the need to protect the unborn child. On Good Friday, the Right to Life Group hold its annual "Hunger Supper" which is a fundraiser for Elizabeth House. They also pray he Stations of the Cross that God will strengthen all of us in our work for the unborn child. Submitted by Ruth Bennett Corner Brook... The Right to Life Group has been holding its annual Good Friday Vigil walking past Western Memorial Hospital for the past 15 years. They have also been praying the 15 Mysteries of the Holy Rosary before the Blessed Sacrament for the past 15 years praying for those who work for the unborn and their mothers, for the mothers, themselves, and for those working in the abortion industry. Submitted by Yvonne Coleman Flatrock... Prayer Service The Knights of Columbus in Flatrock held a prayer service for the unborn and their mothers at the Grotto on June 23. Representatives from the Right to Life, including Noreen Brien, were in attendance. The St. Agnes and St. Michael’s Church ladies held a reception following the service at which they served refreshments. Submitted by Collette Fleming King’s Cove... State Pro-Life Couple Morris and Alice Lewis of King’s Cove, we are the State Couple liaison between the Right to Life Association and the Knights of Columbus. From the outset, we promised to try to inform all the councils about the Right to Life Association and to support Elizabeth House. Last year we placed literature regarding the Right to Life Association and Elizabeth House with the different councils. We held fund raising activities and met in Clarenville with the Right to Life representative Collette Fleming. We encouraged the Knights and their families to become members of the Right to Life. Rose Sunday The Knights in King’s Cove held Rose Sunday this past Mother’s Day. After church, the Knights gave out a rose to be worn in the lapel and asked for a donation for the Right to Life Association and Elizabeth House. For years, the Knights of Columbus, in most Councils throughout the province, held Rose Sunday on Mother’s Day while some held it on Good Friday. Cap and Coat Award At their convention, the knights held their Cap and Coat Award. For a donation of $10.00, a Knight gets to put their name in a bag. One name is chosen. The winner and his council get to display the Cap and Coat at their council for a year. The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus instituted March 20th as the Day of the Unborn. The Roman Catholic church has large boxes at either end of the church. My daughter and her husband bring the tapes to St. John’s to the Right to Life office. This fund raising activity was started under Philomena Rogers when she attended a Catholic Women’s League meeting in Grand Falls. Submitted by Doris Griffin National and International News and Issues I do apologize, but I have been having technical problems with this page for some months now, and can't seem to figure out what is wrong. As a result, I've been unable to update the page regularly.
