Conan, the Greatest Barbarian of them all!

Conan the Barbarian was the creation of Robert E. Howard(1906-1936), a Texas writer who wrote many fantasy-themed short stories. Howard dreamed up such characters as "Sailor Steve Costigan", "Soloman Kane" and "Kull the Conqueror." However, by far his most famous writings were of "Conan of Cimmeria." Howard submitted the bulk of his work to a fantasy/science fiction magazine of the time called "Weird Tales." He continued his chronicles of Conan the Barbarian until the morning of June 11 (my birthday, coincidentally enough), 1936, when he took his own life in a tragic suicide.

However, Howard's creation, Conan, lives on in the writings of other authors. Such works by L. Sprague de Camp, Leonard Carpenter, Lin Carter, Robert Jordan and many others keep the Conan legacy alive.

Conan, a massive barbarian, hails from the distant northland of Cimmeria. His race, the Cimmerians are a grim, dour people who have a dark, dismal outlook on life. Much like his race, Conan is often dark and grim. But, he also enjoys the good life and has a tendancy to indulge in good food, strong drink, and willing wenches. This has gotten him into trouble with the law more than once. Conan is a master of many forms of combat. His ability with the sword is unparalleled and few can match his brute physical strength. He also has a sharp wit and a keen intellect, although most people underestimate him as being a mindless savage because of his appearance and lack of a 'civilized' education. This underestimation has been the downfall of many of Conan's opponents, because he really is quite smart. Quick to anger and often heedless of authority, Conan does not take orders very well. He has spent much of his life with a price on his head. However, he is not without honor. Conan has a strict moral code and sense of ethics stronger than most men. He has been known to travel across half the world to avenge those that did him or his people wrong.

Conan's life and adventures are quite fascinating. If you get the chance, pick up a novel or two.. Ye shant be disappointed.
"Now you know enough not to mess with me!"
