Lancer paperback printing history

The Lancer paperbacks were reprinted several times. The way to at least partially determine which edition it is, is to note the cover price and the color of the page edges.

IV. Donald M. Grant Editions

Beginning in 1974, a series of limited edition books (about 3000 copies) was begun by Donald Grant of West Kingston, RI.

These books contain only the Robert Howard stories, one or two per volume. Each features about a half-dozen full color illustrations by semi-prominent fantasy artists. Several are still in print.

In order of publication:

1974 People of the Black Circle
Illustrations by David Ireland

1975 The Tower of the Elephant
also contains The God in the Bowl
Illustrations by Richard Robertson

1975 A Witch Shall Be Born

As of this writing (Jan 1998), it seems that three more volumes remain to complete the set, probably to contain:

- Beyond the Black River and The Black Stranger

- The Phoenix on the Sword and The Scarlet Citadel

- The Slithering Shadow and perhaps one or more of the fragments: Hall of the Dead, Hand of Nergal, Wolves Beyond the Border

Note: at least two of the Grant editions were reprinted as paperbacks by Grosset & Dunlap:

- The Tower of the Elephant
- The Devil in Iron

V. Berkeley editions, edited by Karl Edward Wagner

Like the Grant books, these feature only the Robert E. Howard Conan stories, exactly as published in Weird Tales. They were published in both hard and softcover; the hardcovers were also printed in Book Club editions, which are noticably thinner, and according to some, have textual errors.

The Hour of the Dragon (Aug 1977)

The People of the Black Circle (Sep 1977)

Red Nails (Oct 1977)
