Ok, so this page is about Linux. What is Linux, I hear no one in particular asking (I should probably do something about those voices). Well, Linux is a freely available unix kernel, covered by the Gnu General Public License. Add to this the trillions of GPL'd and otherwise free unix utilities out there, and you have a very usable, free operating system. Originally targeted towards the Intel 80x86 Family of processors (your standard pc, for all you hardware inept heathens), it runs on just about everything worth running it on now... well, accept for my toaster, but that's in early beta.

Before I sink too deeply into foolish ramblings, here's a list of places where you can find some useful information. Personally, I think useful information is highly overrated... being blatently lied to can be much more entertaining. Anyways, check the following links for people who like to set the record straight:

• Linux Headquarters. If you want a description of this place, you may be a little daft.
• . Administration and programming guides, man pages, and a ton of HOWTO's. If you are having trouble with some aspect of linux, this is the absolute first place to check.
• Linux announcement archive. This could be an archive of messages to the comp.os.linux.announce Usenet newsgroup. Or, it could be a horrible sham, perpetrated by me, to cause you to waste ridiculous amounts of time.
• The Linux Gazette. A neat little online ezine for topics related to Linux.
• Linux Resources. Resources. For Linux. Hence the name.
• LinuxLand. A mud or chat room for Linux. I've never bothered to check it out, which is probably for the best.
• Linux AI/Alife Mini HOWTO. Well, there's no intelligent life outside the box.
• X Games Page. A big list of games available for X11.
• The Linux Game Tome. Seems to be under new ownership, and is constantly updated :)
• Linux Sound apps. An absolutely huge collection of sound related apps.

Some useful software for linux

A couple of pieces of software I find myself using regularly. This is definately not an exhaustive list of decent software out there (you can find a good list at the Woven Goods for LINUX site). Unfortunately, this is rather X-centric, since I've finally had to swallow my immense hatred of windowing systems and start running X most of the time.

• ICEWM. A nice little window manager for X11. I'm divided between this and fvwm (not 2 ;). It's fairly lightweight, with some theming ability, though it doesn't quite have the perks that I like about fvwm (mainly, the division of workspaces into one large virtual screen, which is great for programs that really want big windows). The smallest useful window manager I've found so far.
• Lately I've been toying a bit with Gzilla. This is (currently) an alpha web browser using gtk. It's actually quite usable for browsing docs that really need graphics capabilities, but isn't bloated with all the extra cruft of the commercial browsers. It's small and fast, which I think is a big plus in any piece of software (except emacs, of course :P). Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be getting much development, probably due to the recent release of netscape source code, and other html work going on with the GNOME project.
