Red-throated Loon (Wobby) is uncommon around our coasts throughout
the year, and has bred on a few occasions. This bird is in breeding plumage. The
"standard" or non-breeding plumage is much more reserved, with a gray
back and white under-parts. Note the upturned bill. Photo © Mike Akey

Loon (Diver) is indeed common throughout most of Newfoundland. It
nests on inland lakes in summer, and can be found around the coast on the ocean
in winter.
Pied-billed Grebe (Hell-diver) is an uncommon but regular
visitor, especially in fall and early winter. It frequents inland bodies of
fresh water that have margins with emergent vegetation. It dives frequently and
rapidly. Photo © Karen Chappell
