rthmr.JPG (61809 bytes) rthmbd.JPG (36968 bytes) Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird likely to be seen in Newfoundland. It breeds in small numbers, mostly in western Newfoundland, although breeding records exist from St. John's and Avondale. The bird in these pictures is a female - notice that it does not have a red throat patch.

rufhmgbdfem.JPG (53688 bytes) ruf humm.JPG (21924 bytes) rufhum2.JPG (70101 bytes) Rufous Hummingbird is the only other species of hummer to be recorded in Newfoundland. It is normally resident in western Canada, but has occurred in Newfoundland on a couple of occasions. The female of the species (left photo) is tricky to distinguish from the closely related Ruby-throated Hummingbird. The male Rufous (center and right photos) is very distinctive, however. Notice the brilliant scarlet "gorget".
