American Coot is the only bird in this group that is even moderately
common in Newfoundland. It occurs regularly in small numbers, but is not
known to breed. Note the white bill shield. On land, these birds exhibit three
unusual lobed toes.
Common Moorhen is a rare vagrant to Newfoundland, occurring primarily in
Fall.
Common Moorhen and Purple Gallinule are closely related species that
occur together throughout much of their ranges.
