Checklist

A checklist is an indispensable reference tool. You really should get at least one copy, but preferably several. You will find all sorts of uses for this little marvel.

Species names that are underlined are hyper-linked to a photo of the species that appears elsewhere on this Site. Click on the underlined name to see the picture.

The "Occurrence" column provides coded information on each species. Either you can buy a Secret Sam Decoder Ring, or you can spend a moment getting familiar with the codes:

C    =    Common

U    =    Uncommon

U*  =    Very Uncommon

X    =    Rare

X*  =    Very Rare - recorded 3 times or less

B    =    Breeding Species

b    =    Species that breeds in very low numbers

R    =    Resident Species

E    =    Irruptive (may occur in large numbers in some years)

V    =    Vagrant - occurring outside its normal range

I      =    Introduced

SP =    Spring (March 21 to June 20)

S    =    Summer (June 21 to September 20)

F    =    Fall (September 21 to December 20)

W   =    Winter (December 21 to March 20)

Seasonal status code appearing in lower case indicates that the species occurs less commonly in that season.

This is a Checklist of the species of birds that have been officially recorded on the Island of Newfoundland. It is based on the Checklist (1999) of the Birds of Insular Newfoundland and its Continental Shelf Waters  by Mactavish, Maunder, Montevecchi, and Wells, © Natural History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, 1999, updated by Mactavish and Pratt.
