Red-winged Blackbird is an uncommon breeder in Newfoundland. It breeds
in the western part of the province in small numbers. This is a picture of a
male in breeding plumage, displaying its epaulets in an aggressive posture. The
female is a much more subdued streaky brown.
Yellow-headed Blackbird is a species from western North America. It is a
rare visitor to Newfoundland, but it can occur in any season.
Common Grackle is a fairly large blackbird. It breeds in the western part
of the province, but can be seen almost anywhere. A few always seem to
over-winter, usually near feeders. Notice the long, broad tail, the strong
iridescence and the long, heavy, slightly down-curved bill.
