Here is a painting by my cousin, Claire Bourgeois. She is enrolled in the Fine Arts program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. It is an interpretation of the Orion Nebula based on the photo in the RASC's calendar (not meant to be a literal portrait). The style is similar to Kazuaki Iwasaki. Having never heard of the guy, or never having seen any space art before, that's pretty impressive. If I remember correctly, she said she had layered in the reds especially, to get the fine shades. Of course, the photo doesn't do the real thing any justice (flash reflections, too). I have heard there is another artist at SWGC who does science fiction kind of paintings, as well.

I would like to make the proposal that as part of the activities at the proposed Butterpot Centre for the St. John's Centre RASC, we should have contests on a semi-irregular basis for SWGC artists. The winners would get to publicly exhibit at the Butterpot Centre. This would add a Newfoundland and Labrador theme to the Centre, and also help to promote astronomy if each artist did a little write-up of their ideas for visitors.

In any case, Claire is willing to donate her painting. It sits in a closet, and she will be graduated long before the Centre gets built.
