Winward House |
|
Colourful Heritage... |
|
The North Shore of Conception Bay is
one of the oldest settled areas in Atlantic Canada, and the coastline
is dotted with small fishing communities which have survived war,
weather and hardship since the seventeenth century.
|
|
Historic Carbonear, with its tales of pirates and princesses, is just 20
minutes from
Winward House. |
|
The old whaling station at Dildo is a
40-minute drive, and the Trans Atlantic Cable Station at Heart's
Content is 35 minutes away. |
|
St. John's, North America's oldest city, is a 1½ hour drive on the
Trans Canada Highway. |
|
Historic Trinity, with its world-renowned indoor and outdoor theatrical productions, is 3 hours from
Winward House. |
|
|
Nick Crowe and his
family from Manchester, England stayed at Winward house for 3 weeks
in 2004. Here's what he said about his trip: |
|
"We had a lovely
time staying at Winward House. It was spacious and comfortable
with a great view out to sea. The kids loved it (they still miss
it!) and I will, for the rest of my days, remember sitting on the
deck and watching as a humpback whale flipped right out of the
water. That was magical. Thanks for a wonderful holiday - Winward
House will always be part of our Newfoundland memories."

|
| Winward House
|
|
is a 35-year old, fully furnished, 3 bedroom, 1½ bathroom 'home by the sea' on
the historic North Shore of Conception Bay, Newfoundland.
|
|
The house is situated on a large
ocean-front lot in the community of Blackhead [population <100]. |
|
There is a 150-year old apple tree,
tall maple and flowering crab trees, and a spectacular eastern view
of the ocean as it crashes on the nearby Blackhead rocks. The
veranda spans two sides of the house (east & south), and has a
propane BBQ. |
|
Fond memories are created while
watching the sunrise over the ocean during the summer or the
Northern Lights over the hills in winter. |
|
Winward House
is a non-smoking environment. It has a large living room with CD player/radio; den with cable TV and VCR, eat-in kitchen with modern stove and
fridge, ancient dishwasher and microwave (no kidding - they were
both made as the earth was cooling); and a separate dining room.
|
|
The basement features a full
laundry and a half bathroom. |
|
 |
|
Many
farms on the North Shore are home to the renowned Newfoundland Pony. |

For those with small children,
there is a small swimming hole in Blackhead Brook (two minutes'

Brook (two minutes' drive North). |
|
Take in an evening of
dinner theatre at Carbonear, or just relax on the deck and

| The Baccalieu
Trail |
 |
| |
Northern Gannet |
| The
Baccalieu Trail is the coastal road that encircles the North West
arm of the Avalon Peninsula. It takes its name from Baccalieu
Island on the northern tip - one hour from
Winward House. |
| Baccalieu
Island is Newfoundland's largest bird sanctuary and is home to
Leach's Storm Petrels, Puffins, Common Murres and the Northern Gannet.
The name Baccalieu is derived from a Portuguese word meaning "dried
fish". |
