This page was created at the request of family members of Staff Sergeant Victor B. Dann (photo right) and as a tribute to him, his crew, and all airmen who lost their lives in and around Newfoundland and Labrador during World War Two.

In the early morning hours of 12 December 1944, United States Air Transport Command B-24L Liberator 44-49637 departed Gander, Newfoundland, en route to the Azores. No radio contact was made after take-off, nor was there any indication of a fire or explosion. When Gander received word that the B-24 had not reached its destination, local aircraft began to search the area. At 1700 GMT, some twelve hours after take-off, searchers sighted the remains of 44-49637 in a wooded area across Gander Lake, four miles southwest of the airport. Regrettably, there were no survivors.

Flight Engineer, S/Sgt. Victor B. Dann was 26 years old. The remaining crew were 1st Lt. Robert W. Drew, Pilot, age 45, Flight Officer John W. Ralstin, Co-Pilot, 1st Lt. Robert H. Forsythe, Navigator, and Technical Sergeant Frank J. Sroka, Radio Operator.
