Comments: I am very glad that I found this site and I will return often. I would like for someone to start a site on "Fort Pepperral". I had a great friend, "Bob Reader or Reeder" back in the 1950"s. His father was Sargent Bob Reader. They were from Kansas and I lost touch with them many years ago. I used to visit the base often with this family and for four years I ate meals at their house and Mr. Reader used to cut my hair. I am sure that there are many other people who found comfort with friends at FORT Pepperral.

Comments: On my earlier signing, I forgot to mention a few things. I was a Light Ground Radio Maint. Tech in the 1933rd AFCS Squdron at Harmon. (that's the period when an F102 much like the one exhibited) nearly ran me in my service truck down(!)on a miscue between the Control Tower Operator and myself...
I also served at the local AFR&T Service stations...had a good time in both sides of the radio/tv station.
I was in the control tower the New Year's eve when the operator gave clearance to take off to "Trans Canada Flight..."...and next said, "Air Canada Flight ..., congratulations on your new name and your new flag!" (The Maple Leaf)
Earlir the previous year, we had own tradgedy; we lost an entire, local, KC97 flight crew of five just before Christmas...the props failed to reverse pitch...
I will always remember the pine-tree ladened runways in daylight and blue light glaring through snow packed runways...
I have xeroxed copy of the last aniversary celebration for Harmon AFB if anyone is interested...Ted

Comments: I was stationed at Harmon from March '53 to December '53. Worked on the old MPN-1 radar set there also worked on the MPN-1 & CPN-4 at Goose Bay Aug '52 to Mar '53. I always thought I was crazy, but I liked it at Harmon, use to go hiking out in the boonies whenever I had a long break. I went with a telephone operator from Port au Bass (sp). Would ride the noofy bullet from Stevenville Croosing to P/B.

Comments: I was stationed at Harmon from March '53 to December '53. Worked on the old MPN-1 radar also worked on the MPN-1 & CPN-4 at Goose Bay Aug '52 to Mar '53. A B36 crashed at Goose Bay, I was on duty when it went in. We lost a lot of aircraft USAF & Canadian while I was up there. I was a very young SSgt when I was at Harmon. Use to go hiking out in the boonies whenever I had a long break. The old MPN-1 almost got clobbered on more then one occation by low flying planes or planes going off the taxiway during foggy nights. The day I got to Harmon on my flight from Goose Bay, I was in a C97 with 2 engines out. We declared an emergency but couldn't land right away since a B50 had just crashed on the runway. It almost hit the MPN-1 radar, you could take a giant step out the side door and walk the length of the B50. All in all I really liked it at Harmon. I went through there a few times on trips to & from England & France and spent 3 days there in 1963. Flew up with my buddy, a KC97 crew chief from Hunter field Ga. and then flew back with another friend on another KC97. That was the last time I was there. I enjoyed reading some of the history about Newfoundland.

Comments: I am looking for information as to a self-propelled rail car my company built for the U.S. Army base in Newfoundland. We have a photo of it at our factory in 1941-42 prior to shipment. It is lettered "P-40-1" We are looking to find out what happened to it..could it still be around? We are certain that the car was operated at the Harmon Base but that maybe we had some at Argentia Base..can you help with information or photos?
Thanks,
Steve

Comments: Reputedly my grandmother's uncle Harry Kirk emigrated to Newfoundland and worked in weather forecasting for the north atlantic air routes. He last visited England in the 1930s so trans-atlantic flying would have been in it's infancy. Has anyone any idea how I could confirm or disprove this legend?

Comments: Yesterday , my husband and I visited the site of a plane crash that occurred in 1953 at Burgoynes Cove, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. All the sign said that it was "515 USA Air Cadet Squadron" that crashed in 1953. Any body out there know anything about this. i.e., where they were flying from and to, how many onboard, any survivors, etc?? It seems interesting that they would put a trail up the side of a mountain to the site and not tell you anything about it. It would be nice to know....
