Comments: Was stationed at Pepperrell AFB in 1952-1953 and again in 1956-1959. First time around was with the 108th AC&W Squadron (White Hills and finally on Red Cliff). Second time with 1997th AACS at Snell Grove, 642d AC&W on Red Cliff and then 64th AD(Def) after trip to Greenland on the final survey of the eastern extension of the DEW Line. The picture of Fort Pepperrell of building under construction looks like what was to become Building 610 ( First NEAC Headquarters, then 64th Air Division Headquarters and finally Canadian Forces Headquarters) Great first beginning of another web site dedicated to remembering the joint US and Canadian operations in Newfoundland/Laborador. Keep up the good work. Bob Wilder (USAF Retired)

Comments: Just found your site after Larry O/Brien gave me the address. Congratulations - very nice job. Am researching Commonwealth War Graves at Gander and am interested in corresponding any US personnel who served at Gander during WW2 . A number of US personnel were buried at Gander during the war but were exhumed in Nov 1945 and eventually returned to the USA. Have not been able to find much info on US activieies at Gander in Canadian sources.

Comments: The first time I ever heard of Argentia, Newfoundland was while I was stationed in Chincoteague NAS in VU-4. I was fresh out of AT-A school and there was a crusty old AL-1 in our shop. He was really an AT1 but he was really at heart an AL1. I heard all his sea-stories. My theory was that if he told the same story 3 times it must be true. He had been stationed with one of the PBY VP squadrons during WW2. He was a radio man on one of the crews. He told me about Argentia, and how you couldn't see your wing tips in the fog, and how it snowed horizontally. In 1959 Chinco closed and I was transferred to VW13 at Pax. A month later I was in Argentia myself. I flew ECM and Radar tech on crew 4 for over a year. I saw the snow snow horizontally. I was in a Connie taking off and landing without being able to see even the inboard engines because of the fog. I was in Argentia for three days before I knew there was water around us. It was exciting. Several years later I returned to Chincoteague area for a visit. I looked up my old AL1 buddy who was then retired and living near the old Chincoteague NAS. I confirmed all the old stories he told about Argentia with him adding a few of my own. His name is Gerald (Jerry) PURDY. I used to like to go to the 'beach' in the spring. The water in Placentia Bay was so crystal clear. It was a peaceful place to get away to from the barracks and other annoyances. I still think of those times as good times.

Comments: Reported to VW-11 just in time for the new year party at CPO club 1958. Was a brand new ATC of the group of AL's that were forced out of our radioman rate by NATTC Memphis. Only to report to the squadrons and go right back to pounding a brass key .(..typical --right way, wrong way, and good ole Navy way ). Anyway, alternated flight crews and electronics shop duties until getting orders January 1960 to FAETULANT, Norfolk and then out on 21. Interesting tour , those super connies.

Newly married in August 1964 at Corpus Christi, TX (I had just finished flight training) we left the next day to drive to Arg. What a great experience. Left Arg about a year later when VW-11 was decomissioned (my daughter who was born that November, missed being a Canadian citizen. Spent time there flying P-3s during a tour in VP. Thanks for the glimpses of Arg, Ernest Harmon and Torbay. Tom Assenmacher

Comments: I was stationed in Argentia and Pax River with VW-15 between Jan 1957 and Jan 1960. I ended up as an AT2 radioman on Flight Crew 13 with Cdr. Noon. I operated the ham radio station in Argentia from Feb. 1957 to about July 1957 during VW-15's first deployment connecting shipmates in Argentia with their friends and relatives back in Pax river via phone patch and radio. I also operated the ham station in Pax river until VW-15 returned to Pax river from their 2nd deployment in 1958. At that time I then joined a flight crew on a permanent basis but crews were then sent on 2 week deployments to Argentia then returned for 2 weeks, etc. Please contact me if you were in VW-15 during that period and we can try to remember some of the good times and those wonderful Super Connies. Comments: I was stationed at NAS Argentia, Newfoundland with VW-13 and VW-11 from April 1964 until October 1965 when the North Atlantic Barriers were ended and the squadrons were disestablished (VW-13 on 30-Jul-65; VW-11 on 7-Oct-65). I departed Argentia on 1-Oct-65. The weather may have been harsh, but the people certainly weren't. Haven't heard the word "Newfie" in over 30 years now. Am currently researching information about the squadrons, the base, and the planes that all called NAS Argentia "home" for so many of the "Cold War" years. If you have a story to tell or swap, contact me!
