"On the Toe of the Boot"
By Rosalie Hillier
Anyone who has ever lived in rural Newfoundland will relate to the
stories in On the Toe of the Boot. The fishing and farming economy of High Beach
was similar to many communities in Newfoundland before Confederation. In its brief
existence, from 1890 to the late 1960s, the tiny village was hit by a tidal wave, survived
the Great Depression, and played its part in two World Wars. In this book, the author
recalls her growing-up years in High Beach, and documents the history of the tiny
community.

Includes:
- pictures of and stories about High Beach residents
- family tree of original settlers and their descendants
- census data from 1921, 1935 and 1945
"For those who grew up in the High Beach area, I believe this book will rekindle
memories of your childhood days. It is also my sincere hope that our children and
grandchildren will become more familiar with a way of life that has now disappeared."
