Economic boom expected by mayor

By Natasha Carberry, The Advertiser
October 23, 2000

The business sector in Bishop's Falls is booming, and no one is happier about the news than Mayor Oliver Rose. The municipal leader is pleased to report that council recently approved applications for three new enterprises in the community.

This news, coming on the heels of the announcement that the town could be the future site of a new sewage treatment system manufacturing plant, has the mayor excited about the economic future of the community.

"We have recently approved applications for the opening of a new taxi business, a vegetable processing operation, which will be located in the former Clamar building, and a commercial nursery," said Mayor Rose. "We also approved a major expansion for Newfoundland Styro. That company is doing particularly well, and it is very encouraging to see."

"Things are continuing to look up for the business climate in the town," he added. "We are continually working in partnership with the Bishop's Falls Development Corporation, and the manufacturing sector of the Exploits Valley Economic Development Corporation. We're always searching for new entrepreneurs to come to the community, and help expand our light manufacturing base. It appears to be working."

Successful Strategies

Mayor Rose explained that while the recent economic boom in his community has been long-predicted, it hasn't come without a great deal of work on behalf of council, and the town's residents.

"I think the reason we've been successful in attracting new enterprises is the overall attitude of the town," he said. "We tend to accentuate the positives in our community, and I think business owners appreciate that enthusiasm. That's something I've worked to maintain since I was elected mayor."

"The town also has a good business infrastructure, as well as an attractive tax incentive policy," added the mayor. "I think it is important that new companies be given a break when they are starting up because that's when they really need it. By the time they get established, they are ready to pay their business tax and so on. That combination of factors has gone a long way towards securing new enterprise for the community. I'll do everything in my power to see that this trend continues."

While Mayor Rose said he has no concrete plans to adjust the town's approach to attracting new business, he added he will continue to build on past successes.

"I look at the future of the town, and see a continually expanding business sector," he said. "We have industrial parks on both the east and west ends of the community, and I'd like to see both of them filled with new businesses. We are committed to working hard to sustain the community's viability, and we will work hard to ensure it is even more successful in the future."
