David MacNearney
Newfoundland Styro Inc.
Bishop's Falls, Newfoundland
It is not every leader who can embrace failure as opportunity, but the 1999 Bishop's Falls Entrepreneur of the Year is just such a person. His uncommon ability to see the silver lining through the clouds has helped David MacNearney earn both financial success and the respect of his fellow residents. He says that he learned early in his career to not be afraid of making mistakes. Instead, he advises moving ahead, being curious, asking questions, and when you take wrong turn, being able to admit it. He says that a good leader must not only have the confidence in themselves but they must be equally patient and confident of their staff. By trusting his employees to think independently, MacNearney has found that they are more content, productive, knowledgeable, and motivated. The results are self-evident. Since Newfoundland Styro began operations in 1996, it has seen significant continuous revenue increases and a tripling of its original staff. This rapid growth benefits not only the company but the entire community. In addition to the immediate rewards from job creation, Newfoundland Styro and its owner are proud corporate citizens who have supported upwards of 50 local organizations. David MacNearney and his wife Kathleen have four children (Robin, Doug, Donald, and Ellen).
