II. Installing Dialup Networking for Windows 95:

Sometimes dial-up networking is not installed properly or is corrupted and not sending the script. To reinstall dial-up networking you will need your Windows 95 disks/CDRom.

- Open your Control Panel by clicking the START button, selecting SETTINGS and Control Panel. From here double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.

- From the Add/Remove Programs Properties window select the Windows Set-up "tab" from the top. Then click on Communications from the list and click on the DETAILS button.

Here you will see a check mark in the small box next to the Dial-up Networking icon.

- Click in the small box to remove the check mark and click OK. This will bring you back to the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Click the APPLY button, wait for Windows to update your shortcut groups and then click the OK button. At this point you MUST reboot your computer. (Click START, SHUT DOWN, select Restart the computer and click the YES button).

Once your computer has rebooted and Windows restarted;

- click the START button, selecting SETTINGS and Control Panel. From here double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.

From the Add/Remove Programs Properties window;

- select the Windows Set-up "tab" from the top. Then click on Communications from the list and click on the DETAILS button.

From here you will see that there is no check mark in the small box next to the Dial-up Networking icon.

- This time, click on the small box next to the Dial-up Networking icon to put a check mark back in the box. Click OK. This will bring you back to the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Click the APPLY button, wait for Windows to update your shortcut groups and then click the OK button. You will be prompted to insert your Windows 95 disks/CDRom at this point to install the program. Follow the online instructions and, if using disks, change the disks as requested. When the necessary files have been copied a window will come up to let you know it is done. Click OK.

This will bring you back to the Add/Remove Programs Properties window. Click OK to clear it.

- Close your Control Panel. Reboot your computer before attempting another Internet connection.

III. Modem Problems:

RPI modems (Rockwell and Logitech in particular) and Win modems sometimes cause problems. These modems should have come with their own drivers, usually on a disk and MUST be installed in order to connect. Often people purchase a system with an internal (inside the computer) modem already installed. If your computer's documentation is missing or doesn't specify your modem brand it can be difficult to tell whether or not you have a RPI modem or Win modem and whether or not the drivers have been loaded. Check to see if you have any modem driver disks and, if you do, follow the set-up instructions to install them. Failing this you should contact your computer dealer and ask what type of modem you have and if it is an RPI or WIN modem. You should also ask if the drivers have been loaded.

- If you have a 28.8Kb/s external modem or higher and you are getting online but your connection seems very slow you may have what is known as a UART problem. To check this, click START, select PROGRAMS and MS-DOS Prompt. This will open a black DOS screen. Type cd\ and hit the Enter key. Next, type msd and hit the Enter key.

- Click OK at the warning screen about running Microsoft Windows - this is not a factor when just checking UART.

- Click on the COM Ports button. You will see a list of information under the four different COM Port columns. Look under the COM Port that your modem is using and, at the bottom of the list, check the UART Chip Used number. If this number is 8250 you will need to speak to a computer dealer about how your computer's UART can be upgraded. This is usually an inexpensive endeavour. Your UART should be 16650.

- Click OK and then hit the F3 key to close Microsoft Diagnostics. This should bring you back to the DOS screen. Type exit and hit the Enter key to return to Windows.

IV. Error Message

- "An inconsistency was found in dialup networking dialing options and has been corrected"

- If you get an error to this effect, it is often caused because "cancel call waiting" is selected in the dialing properties with no *70 put in the box next to it. To fix this, double click on your Shortcut to The Zone icon and click on the DIAL PROPERTIES button. In the middle section you will see a check mark in the small box next to "This location has call waiting." Click in the small box to remove the check mark. Click OK.

Everything checked......

- If all your settings seem to be correct and your modem dials and connects but always "hangs" while trying to verify your user name and password, you should check to make sure that the Where Am I program has installed the Dial-Up Scripting tool. To do so, click START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES and check to make sure that Dial-Up Scripting is in the list. If it isn't there, try re-running the Where Am I program.
