Installing the Software:

Before installing the software make sure you have 4 diskettes. They should be labelled Disk 1 of 3, Disk 2 of 3, Disk 3 of 3, and a 4th disk labelled Who Am I? Where Am I?. Also have the printout with your user names and passwords on hand.

- Insert Disk 1 into your floppy drive. Click the START button on the task bar and select RUN.

- Type A:\SETUP and click OK. You will see our logo screen pop up and The Zone set-up program loading.

The first screen, labelled "Welcome," contains important information we advise you to read.

- When finished, click NEXT.

The next screen asks where on your computer's hard drive you want the software installed. We advise that you accept the default (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Navigator).

- Click NEXT.

Dialup Network:

The next screen asks if you want dial-up networking to create a dial-up connection to the Internet.

- Select YES and click NEXT.

Dial-up Networking is the dialing program that Windows 95 uses to login to the Internet. It is a component of the Windows 95 operating system but is not installed as part of the "typical" Windows 95 installation. If your Windows 95 does not have dial-up networking already installed, you will need access to your Windows 95 disks/CDRom to install dial-up networking. Please see our Troubleshooting section for instructions.

Once all the software has been loaded, reboot your computer (START, SHUT DOWN, select "Restart the computer" and click YES). If you installed Dial-up Networking and your computer rebooted automatically you can skip this reboot.

Configuring the Software:

Once Windows has restarted you should see a window, or box, called "Netscape Navigator" with "The Zone" icons in it.

- If the window is not open you can open it by clicking the START button, select PROGRAMS, find NETSCAPE and click on it.

- Double click on the icon labelled The Zone Set-up Wizard. Click NEXT at the first logo welcome screen.

The first window tells you that you will need access to your Account Information, Modem Information and Dialing Information. The account information you will get from your copy of our sign-up form you filled in when you set-up your account. Make sure you have it close by.

The modem information (brand name and model, baud rate) you will have with the documentation that came with your computer. This Set-up Wizard will attempt to detect and identify your modem as part of the process. The dialing information is provided in these instructions.

- Click NEXT.

The next screen asks for your full name.

- Click once in the box to start typing. What you type here will be used in your e-mail messages to identify who the message is from. You may use capital letters and punctuation. (John X. Doe)

You may fill in a company name, if applicable, in the same way or just leave this box blank.

- Click NEXT.

The next screen asks for your Login name. This is the "Generated Login User name" from your sign-up form. (gaa###) Do not use capital letters or spaces when you type this.

The password is the "Generated Login Password" from the sign-up form. Be sure to type this in exactly as it appears on the form.

- Click NEXT.

The next screen asks for your e-mail login. This is the "POP Account" user name from your sign-up form (aaa###). The password is the "POP Password" from your sign-up form.

Note: If you purchased extra e-mail accounts you should leave this section blank (username and password) for now and configure all your e-mail accounts with the "Who am I" configuration program as described later in this documentation.

- Click NEXT.

Especially important if calling long distance, the next screen asks for the local dial-up phone number. Type in the area code 709 and get the phone number from the "Local Dial-Up Numbers" section of this booklet. If it is a new site then contact 1-888-49-Cable to find the local phone number.

The next screen explains that the set-up program will now attempt to automatically detect your modem. Be sure your modem is connected to a phone line. If its an external modem it must also be plugged in and turned on.

- Click NEXT.

The next screen allows you to select an option to specify your modem yourself. Leave this blank for now.

- Click NEXT to allow the Modem Wizard to start.

Setting up your Modem

This Modem Set-up Wizard attempts to automatically detect your modem type. If the Wizard detects your modem, a screen similar to the one below will appear, with your modem type included in the box.

Some modems the Wizard will not be able to detect. If the next screen says "Modem Set-up was unable to detect your modem ..."

- If you know your modem type - just click the NEXT button to select it yourself, pick the brand name of your modem from the "Manufacturer" list on the left and the model from the "Model" list on the right.

- If you do not know the brand or model of your modem - you should find this in your computer's documentation or contact your computer dealer.

- If you know your modem type and it is not listed - select (Hayes compatible) or (Standard Modem Types) from the top of the list and the correct rate (14,400;28,800;33,600)from the list on the right and click NEXT.

If you selected Hayes compatible or Standard Modem Types for your modem you may also get a screen asking you to select the port to use with this modem. This information should also be in your computer documentation or you can call your computer dealer. Most systems use COM Port 2. Pick a COM Port and Click NEXT.

The next screen will ask you if the modem information is correct.

- If it is, click NEXT, if not, click CHANGE or RERUN MODEM WIZARD and select your modem from the lists.

Note: If you have a Win modem or a Rockwell or Logitech (RPI) modem you will need to install the software drivers that came on diskette with the modem. If you purchased your modem at the same time as your computer, the drivers should have been pre-installed. If you are unsure of this, please contact your computer dealer.

The next screen is just to verify your modem and give you another chance to restart the Modem Wizard. If the modem is correct click NEXT. If not, click RERUN MODEM WIZARD and follow the above steps again

This completes your modem installation. Click FINISH on the next screen.

Dialing Information:

The next screen asks for dialing information for the phone line you are dialing from.

- Type the area code and phone number your are dialing from and click NEXT.

The box below it asks if you must dial a number to access an outside line, such as dialing 9 to get outside a company phone system. If you do not, leave this blank. Otherwise, enter the necessary number.

At the bottom you must select the type of telephone service offered in your area.

- If you have a Touch Tone phone, Choose Tone. Otherwise, Choose Pulse. Most areas would select Tone. If you are unsure of the service provided in your local area please contact a telephone company representative in your area.

- Click NEXT.

The next screen asks for dialing information for the phone line you are using for your modem.

- Type in your area code and phone number and click NEXT.

The next screen asks for information about the phone line you are using. The first section asks about Call Waiting.

- If you have call waiting - and receive a phone call while online you will be disconnected from your Internet connection. If this is something you would like to avoid, you may use this section to disable the call waiting option for your Internet connection only. With call waiting disabled, a caller would get a busy signal while you are using the phone line for your Internet connection. We suggest you disable it.

- To disable call waiting, click in the box next to "Disable Call Waiting" to place a check mark there and type *70, in the larger next to "with:" (or select it from the drop down list).

- If you do not have call waiting on your line - do not disable it here. If you do, you will not be able to connect to the Internet at all but will get a busy signal every time.

The final screen of the Set-up Wizard lets you know that you have finished this part of The Zone configuration, click FINISH.

You will see "shortcuts" (icons on your desktop) created for "Netscape Navigator" and "Shortcut to the Zone". The Navigator window with "The Zone" icons should still be there. Do not close this.

Next, you must reboot your computer to save your settings.

- Choose START, SHUT DOWN, select "Restart your computer" and click YES.

Who Am I? Where Am I?

IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL USERS MUST INSTALL WHO AM I? WHERE AM I?, IF YOU DO NOT INSTALL THIS PROGRAM THE SERVICE WILL NOT WORK.

The "Who Am I? Where Am I?" has two important functions and is unique to "The Zone".

I. Who Am I?

With the Who Am I utility, we have provided an easy way to maintain multiple e-mail boxes, while only installing one version of Netscape Navigator. So, why does this help you? Well, it provides a friendly interface to configuring you e-mail correctly, to ensure that you never miss an important message. In addition, it saves you precious hard disk space; why install 4 or 5 different e-mail browsers, when your whole family can use the same one with a simple click. The Who Am I utility will store up to 10 different e-mail box settings, each saved under a unique

II. Where Am I?

The "Where Am I" software is used to change what location you are dialing from. Your primary location is chosen upon set up however, if you dial in from another location other than you primary location you must use this program to change the local dial in number.

- Type A:\SETUP and click OK.

The first screen is just a Welcome screen that tells you the "Who am I Where am I" software will be installed.

- click PROCEED to update your Windows 95 registry.

The next screen, Configuration Complete, tells you to go to your dial-up window and change the dial-up number.

Your POP User name is the "POP Account" user name from your sign-up form (aaa###).

Your Real Name can be typed in as you would like it to appear when you send e-mail. You may use capital letters, spaces and punctuation here (John X. Doe).

Your E-mail Address is the Main E-mail Name (Alias) that you choose when you signed up. Type this in as a complete e-mail address (John.Doe@thezone.net).

The Return Address should be identical to the E-mail Address above.

After all e-mail accounts are set up close the Navigator window by clicking on the small X in the box in the upper right corner of the Navigator window. You should now reboot your computer once more before going online. Don't forget to remove your Where Am I disk first then click the START button andselect SHUT DOWN. Select "Restart the Computer" and click YES.

Getting Online:

You are now ready to go online. Double click on the Shortcut to the Zone icon on your desktop. Your user name (gaa###) should already be there. You may need to type in your password. Do so carefully as it will come up as all **** for security - be sure that your caps lock key is not on.

Verify the phone number against the number in the Local Dial-Up Numbers section of this documentation.

Click the CONNECT button.

A new window will appear called Connecting to The Zone. Depending on your modem you may hear it dial and connect. You should see the program verify your user name and password and finally login to the network.

Once online, the Window will change to one telling you the baud rate you are connected at and a timer will keep track of your online time. (If you get an error before logging on, such as "dialup networking could not negotiate a compatible set of protocols", check out the troubleshooting section at the end of this section.)

You should then minimize this window by clicking on the small box with a dash in it in the upper right corner of the window. This will keep the dialing program running to keep you online but clear your desktop so that you can use your other Internet Software.

Disconnecting from the Internet

To disconnect, first close Netscape (or any other Internet programs you may be running). Click on the minimized dialing program icon on the task bar to restore it and click the DISCONNECT button.

You should be aware that whether you are using the Internet or not as long as the dial-up networking is running you are using your account hours. It is important to
remember to disconnect when you are finished.
