Installing The Software
Before installing the software make sure you have 4 disks. They should be labelled Disk 1 of 3,
Disk 2 of 3, Disk 3 of 3, and a 4th disk labelled Who am I? Where am I?. Also have the printout with your user
names and passwords on hand.
- Insert Disk 1of 3 into your floppy drive. Click on FILE and select RUN.
- Type A:\SETUP and click ok. You will see our logo screen and the set-up program loading.
- The first screen, labelled Welcome, explains the three step process. Click NEXT. We advise you to read
this.
The next screen, labelled Set-up Type, asks you to choose a Typical or Custom installation. - Select Typical
and click NEXT.
The next screen, labelled Choose Destination Location, asks you where on your computer's hard drive you would
like The Zone software installed. The default is C:\NETSCAPE and we suggest you do not change it.
- Click NEXT.
The Install Wizard will now start copying the necessary files to your computer. Switch the disks as prompted.
Do not install the fourth disk labelled "Who am I, Where am I" yet. We will do this later.
Once all the files are copied a new screen, Install Wizard Complete, appears prompting you to restart your computer.
Although the option is there to restart later, The Zone software installation requires that you do this restart
now. Make sure that the "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" is selected, NOT the option to
restart Windows only.
- Remove Disk 3 and click FINISH. If Windows does not start automatically, type WIN at the DOS prompt (black
screen) and press the ENTER key to start Windows.
Configuring the Software:
The Zone Install Wizard will have created a new program group, or a box, called "Netscape Personal Edition."
If it is not open after restarting your computer, double click on the icon, or picture, labelled "Netscape
Personal Edition" to open it.
- Double click on the icon labelled "The Zone Set-up Wizard".
The first logo screen explains that this program will configure your software.
- Click NEXT.
The next screen tells you that you will be asked to include some information such as account information, modem
information and dialing information. The account information you will get from your copy of our sign-up form you
filled in when you set-up your account. Make sure you have it close by!
The modem information (brand name and model, rate) you will have with the documentation that came with your
computer. This Set-up Wizard will attempt to detect and identify your modem as part of the process. The dialing
information is provided in these instructions.
- Click NEXT.
The next screen asks for your full name.
- Click once in the box to start typing. What you type here will be used in your e-mail messages to identify
who the message is from. You may use capital letters and punctuation. (John Doe)
You may fill in a company name, if applicable, in the same way or just leave this box blank.
- Click NEXT.
The next screen asks for your Login name. This is the "Generated Login Username" from your sign-up
form. (gaa###) Do Not use capital letters or spaces when you type this.
The password is the "Generated Login Password" from the sign-up form. Be sure to type this in exactly
as it appears on the form.
- Click NEXT.
The next screen asks for your e-mail login. This is the "POP Account" username from your sign-up form
(aaa###). The password is the "POP Password" from your sign-up form.
Note: If you purchased extra e-mail accounts you should leave
this section blank (username and password) for now and configure all your e-mail accounts with the "Who am
I" configuration program as described later in this documentation.
- Click NEXT.
The next screen asks for the local dial-up phone number. Type in the area code 709 and get the phone number
from the "List of The Zone local Dial-Up Numbers" section of this booklet. If you are in a new Zone area
and the location is not in the list call 1-888-49CABLE and ask for the number for your area.
- Click NEXT.
The next screen explains that the set-up program will now attempt to automatically detect your modem. Be sure
your modem is connected to a phone line. If its an external modem it must also be plugged in and turned on. Click
NEXT.
Setting up your modem:
The computer will not be able to detect some modems. If the next screen says "Modem Set-up was unable to
detect your modem ..."
- If you know your modem type - just click the NEXT button
to select it yourself, pick the brand name of your modem from the "Manufacturer" list on the left and
the model from the "Model" list on the right.
- If you do not know the brand or model of your modem - you should find
this in your computer's documentation or contact your computer dealer. If this information is unavailable, choose
"Hayes compatible" and the correct rate from the list.
- If you know your modem type and it is not listed - select "Hayes
compatible" from the top of the list and the correct rate (14,400, 28,800, 33,600) from the list on the right
and click NEXT. If for some reason you are unable to get the information of your modem type, you may as a
last resort choose one of the above types. However, please note that you some features of your modem
may not work if you choose a generic modem type and we highly recommend getting this information.
**If the modem wizard could not detect your modem you will also get a screen asking for the correct COM Port.
This information should also be in your computer documentation or available from your computer dealer.**
- Click FINISH to complete the Modem Set-up.
The next screen is just to verify your modem and give you another chance to restart the Modem Wizard.
- If the modem is correct click NEXT. If not, click RERUN MODEM WIZARD and follow the above steps again.
Note: If you have a Win modem or a Rockwell or Logitech (RPI)
modem you will need to install the software drivers that came on diskette with the modem. If you purchased your
modem at the same time as your computer, the drivers should have been pre-installed. If you are unsure of this,
please contact your computer dealer. Please see the Troubleshooting section at the end of the manual.
- Your modem configuration is now complete.
Dialing Information:
Especially important, the next screen asks for dialing information for the phone line you are using for
your modem.
- If caling long distance type in your area code and phone number and click NEXT.
The next screen asks for information about the phone line you are using. The fist section asks about Call Waiting.
- If you have the call waiting - if you get a phone call while online
you will be disconnected from your Internet connection. If this is something you would like to avoid, you may use
this section to disable the call waiting option for your Internet connection only. With call waiting disabled,
a caller would get a busy signal while you are using the phone line for your Internet connection. We suggest you
disable it.
- To disable call waiting click in the box next to "Disable Call Waiting" to place a check mark there
and type *70, in the larger box next to "with:" (or select it from the drop down list).
- If you do not have the call waiting - do not disable it!!! If you disable
it here, you will not be able to connect to the Internet at all but will get a busy signal every time.
The next section asks if you must dial a number to access an outside line, such as dialing 9 to get outside
a company phone system. Leave this blank if you don't need to dial a number or, if you do, type in the number.
The last section asks for the type of phone service offered in your area.
- If you have a Touch Tone phone choose Tone. Otherwise, choose Pulse. Most areas would select Tone.
-Click NEXT.
The final screen of the Set-up Wizard lets you know that you have finished this part of The Zone configuration.
- Click FINISH.
Now you should see a box labelled "Netscape Personal Edition" with a number of icons inside it. Close
Windows and restart your computer before continuing.
Who Am I? Where Am I?
IMPORTANT NOTE: ALL USERS MUST INSTALL WHO AM I? WHERE AM I?, IF YOU DO NOT INSTALL THIS PROGRAM THE SERVICE WILL
NOT WORK.
The "Who Am I? Where Am I?", Disk 4, has two important functions and is unique to "The Zone",
I. Who Am I?
With the Who Am I utility, we have provided an easy way to maintain multiple e-mail boxes, while only installing
one version of Netscape Navigator. So, why does this help you? It provides a friendly interface to configuring
your e-mail correctly, to ensure that you never miss an important message. In addition, it saves you precious hard
disk space; why install 4 or 5 different e-mail browsers, when your whole family can use the same one with a simple
click. The Who Am I utility will store up to 10 different e-mail box settings, each saved under a unique profile.
II. Where Am I?
The "Where Am I" software is used to change the location you are dialing from. Your primary location
is chosen upon set up. However, if you dial in from a location other than your primary location, you must use this
program to change the local dial in number.
Installation:
After restarting, insert the "Who am I? Where am I?" disk in your floppy drive.
- Click FILE and select RUN.
- Type A:\SETUP and click OK.
The first screen is just a Welcome screen that tells you the "Who am I Where am I" software will be
installed.
- Click OK.
The software will copy the files and then a screen will come up called Software Complete telling you that the
files have been copied.
- Click OK.
The next screen, another Welcome, tells you that the Where am I program will now be run. This program
includes the information to dial into the Internet, and you cannot log on without it.
-Click OK.
On the "Choose your dial-in location" screen;
- select your location from the list. If your location is a Zone location added recently it may not be in the
list. Select "Generic Location 2" from the bottom of the list and type in the local dial-up number excluding
the area code in the box below labelled "Phone Number: For generic selections only". If you are uncertain
about which location to choose, call technical help 1-888-742-4357.
-Click CONTINUE.
The last screen, Configuration Complete, lets you know that your dialer is configured for your location.
- Click OK.
Continue to set up Who Am I?:
Now double click the Who Am I icon to start this program and configure your e-mail accounts.
- Click OK at the Welcome to Who Am I screen.
At the next screen, select "New or existing profile" and click CONTINUE.
In the Choose Profile window;
-select 1- and click OK.
The next screen is your User Settings set-up screen.
- Next to Profile Name, just type in your first name or something that will identify whose e-mail this profile
will check.
DO NOT make any changes to the SMTP Server (mail.thezone.net) or the
POP server (pop.thezone.net) sections.
-Your POP Username is the "POP Account" username from your sign-up form (aaa###).
-Your Real Name can be typed in as you would like it to appear when you send e-mail. You may use capital letters,
spaces and punctuation here (John X. Doe)
-Your Email Address is the Main Email Name (Alias) that you choose when you signed up. Type this in as a complete
e-mail address (John.Doe@thezone.net).
- The Return Address should be identical to the Email Address above.
- Under Organization you may type a company name, if applicable, or The Zone and click ACCEPT CURRENT VALUES.

- Next you should get a Set-up Complete screen. Just click OK.
This will return you to your Windows background with the Navigator window open. If, and only if
you need to set up extra e-mail accounts, you should run the Who Am I? again.
- After all e-mail accounts are set up reboot your computer one last time before you go online.
Getting Online:
Congratulations!!! You have successfully installed your software
and your Internet connection is now ready to use.
- To log on, first double click on "The Zone Dialler" to open the dialing program and click the DIAL
button.
A window titled "The Zone" will appear and, depending on your modem type, you may hear it dialing
and connecting. You will see a number of different messages appear in the window. This is our security program
and dialing script running to verify your username and password and log on to The Zone.
When the process is complete this window will disappear as the program opens a new window in the upper right
corner of your screen. It contains a timer that keeps track of your online time for this particular Internet session.
This window will remain "on top" in this corner. This means you have successfully logged on to the Internet.
If you prefer, you can minimize this so that it appears as an icon at the bottom of your screen "behind"
your other software. To do this, simply click on the small arrowhead pointing down in the upper right hand corner.
You are now ready to go online. Double click on the Shortcut to the Zone icon on your desktop. Your user name
(gaa###) should already be there. You may need to type in your password. Do so carefully as it will come up as
all **** for security - be sure that your caps lock key is not on.
Verify the phone number against the number in the Local Dial-Up Numbers section of this documentation.
Click the CONNECT button.
A new window will appear called Connecting to The Zone. Depending on your modem you may hear it dial and connect.
You should see the program verify your user name and password and finally login to the network.
You should then minimize this window by clicking on the small box with a dash in it in the upper right corner
of the window. This will keep the dialing program running to keep you online but clear your desktop so that you
can use your other Internet Software.
Now that you have been able to log on to the Internet, you're probably wondering "What do I do now?".
The Starter's Guide includes some brief tips on how to surf around on the
Internet and how to visit World Wide Web sites.
Disconnecting from the Internet:
To disconnect, first close Netscape (or any other Internet programs you may be running). If you did not minimize
the dialing program, simply click the DISCONNECT button. If you did minimize the dialing program, double click
on the icon at the bottom of the screen to restore it and then click the DISCONNECT button.
If you have minimized your dialing program and cannot see the minimized icon, your Program Manager window is
likely taking up your whole screen and the dialing program icon may be hiding behind it. Click on the small arrow
head pointing down in the upper right corner of your Program Manager window. You should now be able to see an icon
labelled "Netscape Personal Edition". This is your dialing program minimized.
You should be aware that whether you are using the Internet or not as long as the dialing program is still
running you are using your account hours. It is important to remember to disconnect when you are finished.
