The World Wide Web:

When you go online and open your Netscape Navigator program you are on the World Wide Web. This is the most popular aspect of the Internet. Our software is designed to bring you to our Zone homepage.

The first thing you will notice about the "Web" is that you can move from one "site" to the next by clicking on "links" with your mouse. You can tell when your mouse cursor is over a link because it changes from an arrow to a hand with a pointing finger.

There are many links on our Zone homepage that you can follow to get more information about out service.

The bar at the top of the Netscape window has buttons that you can use to help you "navigate" the Web. The first button, labelled BACK will take you to your previous step. If you haven't been to any other pages yet this will be "dimmed" and unavailable for use until you do move onto another page.

The next button, labelled FORWARD does the opposite - if you've used the BACK button and want to return to the page you were on before you went back you can click the FORWARD button to get there.

The next button is the HOME button and it will always take you to The Zone homepage.

The next button, RELOAD is used if, for some reason, a page loads incorrectly. Clicking this button will just reload whatever page is currently on your screen.

Next is the IMAGES button which is used to turn off graphics. As you use the Web you will notice that text loads very quickly but pictures often take longer. If you have a very slow modem and are tired of waiting for graphics to load you can use this button to turn off the graphics and stop them from loading at all.

The next button, OPEN is used if you have an Internet address that you would like to go to. An Internet addresses is known as a URL (Universal Resource Locator) and follows the format http://www.thezone.net. This is the URL for The Zone home page. If you have an address or site that you would like to try, click this button, type the address (or URL) in the Open Location box and click the OPEN button on the window. You will find that there is no need to type the http:// as all addresses start with this and Netscape will add it for you.

The PRINT button is used to print the page that you have currently onscreen. This will print to whatever printer you have currently configured in Windows. It will not print the button bar and Netscape logo, just the site's page.

The FIND button is used to locate a specific area of the page you are currently on. This is mostly used for sites that contain long lists and text. You can type in a key word here and click the FIND NEXT button on the window and Netscape will take you to the area of the site that contains that word.

The last button, STOP, is used if you wish to stop a page from loading before it is finished.

Searching the World Wide Web:

The most common use of the Web is to use a "Search Tool" to look for a topic of interest or a company. One of the better search tools, and there are many, is called MetaCrawler. To access this tool, click your OPEN button and type in www.metacrawler.com and click the OPEN button on the window. This will take you to the MetaCrawler search tool.

Most all search tools work the same way, there is a box for you to type in a key words, phrase, company name, etc., and a button to click to start the search.

To try this out, type in a word or words of something that interests you. Below the text box select how you would like MetaCrawler to search:

- A phrase will treat all the words entered as a string

- Search for all the words individually

- Any of these words is a broader search that may give you more results than you care to look through

Then click either the FAST SEARCH or the COMPREHENSIVE SEARCH button on the window. If you are looking for a site that you know should be easy to find, such as Netscape's home page, click FAST SEARCH. If you are searching for a topic and would like a very thorough search, click COMPREHENSIVE SEARCH. This will take a little longer but will yield better results.

You will see a couple screens pass as MetaCrawler does its search. One of the things that makes this such a good search tool is that it also uses other search tools to get more results. When the search is complete, you will end up on a page with the heading MetaCrawler Search Results.

This page will list a number of links (underlined in red lettering) and a brief description of each link. You can click on these links to go to the site described.

Occasionally when you try to access a site on the Web you will get an error that "The requested URL was not found" or "No DNS entry". This usually means that whoever put up the site in the first place has either moved it or removed it. It can also mean that there is some piece of equipment down between your computer and the one you are contacting. Often you can try this site a little later and get to it.

Using Bookmarks on the Web:

You will notice a heading called BOOKMARKS on the menu bar at the top of your Netscape screen. This is a very handy tool to save URL's of sites you will want to go to again and again so that you don't have to remember them or keep written lists. If you click on the BOOKMARKS heading now you will notice that there are a number of sites set up in categories already for you. You can go to any of these sites by just clicking on them in the drop down lists.

To bookmark any site you have currently onscreen, just click the BOOKMARKS heading and select ADD BOOKMARK. You will notice that your bookmark gets added to the bottom of the list. If your list gets too long you will not be able to see the latest bookmarks added. Choose the "More Bookmarks" option to view the complete list.

Fine Tuning:

Do this off-line. You can customize the options of this dialing program to suit your needs. To access these options, open the dialing program and click on the PROPERTIES button (before going online). We advise you not to make any changes you aren't sure of.

The different options are accessed by clicking on the "tabs" at the top of the window. The first tab, Locations, should not be changed unless obviously incorrect. These options were set up as part of the Set-up Wizard.

The second tab, General, allows you to change how the dialing program behaves once logged on. In the first section, "When Connected" you may change settings that will allow you to - Automatically start Netscape Navigator once logged on; automatically minimize the dialing program once logged on and automatically disconnect you if you forget (downloading is not considered inactivity).

Do NOT make changes in the "Logging in" section.

The dial on demand option means that if you try to use a program that requires you be online but you have forgotten to log on first, the dialing program will pop up automatically.

The Modem tab should have been configured via the Set-up Wizard but some modems will allow you to control their volume levels from here.

Do NOT make any changes in the Service Provider tab section unless it is different than:

Primary DNS: 192.75.13.101

Secondary DNS: 134.153.2.90

Domain Name: thezone.net

Click OK to have any changes take effect or CANCEL if you didn't change anything.
