Converting to The Zone
(from current STEM~net account)
Many STEM~net users will be familiar with a program called TIA (The Internet Adapter), and another called Trumpet
Winsock (or simply Winsock). These programs allowed a person with only Telnet (or Rlogin) access to connect and
use SLIP (or PPP), so that they could view graphics on the Internet (via Netscape or Internet Explorer).
With the Zone account, you get the same functionality, without the need for the TIA program. In order to use
your new Zone account with Trumpet Winsock, you will need to make a few small changes.
- Setup the appropriate connection script for the Zone account
- Download the appropriate script file from here
- Delete or rename your current "LOGIN.CMD" script file (probably located in a directory called C:\stemslip\driver)
- Copy the new script (downloaded from step 1) into the Trumpet Winsock Directory (e.g. C:\stemslip\driver)
- Rename the new script to "LOGIN.CMD"
- Get the Username/Password setup script for the Zone account
- Download the setup command file SETUP.CMD
- Delete or rename your current "SETUP.CMD" script file (probably located in a directory called C:\stemslip\driver)
- Copy the new script (downloaded from step 1) into the Trumpet Winsock Directory (e.g. C:\stemslip\driver)
- Change the settings under the "File" menu option called "Setup", to the following:
- Select internal PPP
- Set your modem speed according to your modem type
- Select your com port (usually 1 or 2)
- Change the Dialing options under the "Dialer" menu option called "SETUP.CMD", to the following:
- Enter the local dial number when prompted. Remember to add the long distance number (1) plus the area code
if dialing long distance.
- Enter your Zone login name (e.g. gaa000), exactly as given to you.
- Enter your Zone login password, exactly as given to you.
- Now, to dial in and get connected:
- Since you have made setup changes, you must restart Trumpet Winsock.
- Now, select the "Login" option from the "Dialer" menu, and your modem should begin to dial
the Zone server.
- Once connected (i.e. Trumpet reports PPP enabled, Script disabled), minimize the Trumpet Winsock dialer and
begin surfing.
